NBA 2K18 is the last game in the series that will be made available on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. It's also the first game that features the Neighbourhoods mode that allows the creation of a world-wide game and lets fans meet with stars. The game was praised for its playability, however microtransactions, as well as the poorly implemented Neighbourhoods mode, were heavily criticised by the players and critics alike. In the end, Visual Concepts would at least improve this feature in future releases.

NBA 2K14, the 15th installment of the series was the most-sold sports game in the eighth generation. There are numerous features in the game, including a training camp mode and new signature skills. There were some who were happy to find some new ideas and creativity, which is not common in annual sim franchises.

NBA 2K15 introduces a couple of new game modes such as scanning and a new MyCareer mode, as well as a brand new system to improve the satisfaction of coaches.
