It’s been a while since we’ve heard much about League of Legends: Wild Rift, the mobile and console spinoff of the long-running strategy game. Today, as part of the ongoing Summer Game Fest, Riot gave the best look yet at the game, with a lengthy video presentation that covers everything from characters to gameplay to skins. While the game still doesn’t have a release date — it’s expected to launch sometime this year — Riot says that it’s starting its first early tests soon with an early alpha on Android in Brazil and the Philippines.
Riot has said in the past that Wild Rift isn’t a direct port of the original PC version of League of Legends; instead, it’s a tweaked version better suited to these new platforms. That includes the obvious changes to the controls, with a new twin-stick setup as well as other shifts like shorter matches and smaller maps.
Wild Rift was initially slated for a release in early 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic has delayed the game to late 2020. Alpha and beta tests are still expected to drop throughout the year, with the first “very limited alpha test” to take place next month in Brazil and the Philippines. The game will be a free to play title and it is not a direct port of the PC version of League of Legends. Instead, Wild Rift has been developed from scratch and will have differences including refreshed models and animations. This means that there will be no crossplay between the PC version of League of Legends and Wild Rift on mobile and consoles. However, the two versions of the games will likely share themes and events as they are added to the game by Riot Games.
Wild Rift is just one of the releases Riot has planned for what’s shaping up to be a busy year for the one-time single-game studio. In less than a week, its first-person tactical shooter Valorant will become officially available to anyone who wants to play it.
